Leicester VS Tottenham, September 18th.

After a long wait, the WSL is finally back, Tottenham has seen many players leave in the summer and have recruited seven new signings during the break.

Tottenham’s preseason hasn’t gone to plan after losing every game in the Women’s Cup (1-2 vs Tokyo, 1-2 vs Club America) and ending preseason back in London with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea 3 weeks ago, but now is where the real work begins. After last week’s postponement, Tottenham’s 2022-23 season kicked off against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Conti Cup.

The draw for this season’s Conti Cup has been made with Tottenham being drawn into Group E alongside Coventry United, Southampton and Reading. Dates and times will be announced in due course as our Lilywhites wait to find out where they will be playing each opponent.

Welcome back.

As well as adding seven new recruits, Tottenham welcome back Gracie Pearse from her loan spell. Gracie has looked very impressive from her time at Crystal Palace and will no doubt cement a place in the starting XI very soon. We would also like to wish Esther Morgan and Eleanor Heeps the best of luck on their loans to Coventry United.

In other news, we need to say a HUGE welcome back to Kit Graham who is back training and getting stronger each day. We can’t wait to see Kit back on the pitch working her magic.

Lineups.

Leicester 3-5-2: Levell in goal, Tierney, Plumptre and Purified in defence. The Leicester midfield was made of Simon down the right, Pike, Green and Jones in the centre of midfield with Howard down the left. The Leicester frontline was made of Flint and Whelan.

Tottenham 4-4-3: Spencer in goal, Turner, Bartrip and Zadorsky in defence. The midfield was made of Neville in at left wing-back, James and Summanen in the centre of defence with Ale down the right as a wing-back. The Tottenham front line was made of Spence, Naz and Ayane.

First half.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

The game started quite evenly with most of the battle taking place in the middle of the park. Tottenham was forced into an early substitution when a challenge by former Tottenham player Josie Green forced Ayane off in the 15th minute and saw new signing Ellie Brazil come on for the number 23. Leicester came close to finding a goal in the 23rd minute when Jones won the ball in midfield before finding Purfield down the left who shot from distance but her effort was over Spencer’s goal.

Two minutes later Leicester came close again when Purfield did well down the left and got a cross into the Tottenham box but her cross was just too high for Flint who couldn’t head the ball. Leicester looked the most comfortable in the opening 30 minutes but it was Neville who calmed Tottenham’s nerves in the 34th minute by unleashing a rocket from distance, looping the ball over Lavell to give Tottenham the lead against the run of play.

After the goal, it was Tottenham that was in control and kept pushing forward looking for a second. Tottenham came close in the 38th minute when Summanan found Naz with a pass, who shot from an angle but her effort was put out for a corner by Lavell. James floated the Tottenham corner into the Leicester box which wasn’t dealt with by the defence and Zadorsky hit a volley but her effort was deflected out for another corner. New signing Ellie Brazil tried her luck in the 41st minute with a shot from distance but her effort was deflected out for a corner. The fourth official indicated a minimum of 4 minutes of injury time and in the 47th minute, Drew Spence hit a low shot from distance past Levell to give Tottenham a two-goal lead at the break.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Second half.

The second half started at a slow pace with most of the play taking place in the middle of the park. Tottenham looked the most likely to cause a threat but the Foxes were playing with a midfield of five to prevent Tottenham from breaking through. Leicester came close in the 55th minute when Jones latched onto a Purfield cross, finding herself in space in the Tottenham box but only managed to put her effort over Spencer’s bar.

Two minutes later Leicester was again on the attack but Bartrip blocked well to concede a corner. The corner was whipped in by Purfield into the Tottenham box which Spence turned into her own net to give Leicester some hope. Skinner made a change in the 60th minute, bringing Simon on for Naz who had an immediate impact whipping a ball into the Leicester box which Summanen cleverly flicked on to Brazil but her effort was straight at Lavell who put the ball out for a corner.

Photo: @LCFC_women Twitter

Leicester began to grow and gain confidence after the goal as they pushed for an equaliser but it was Tottenham that still looked the more dangerous going forward. Leicester had an opportunity in the 80th minute when a Purfield cross was met by Pumptre but her header was saved well by Spencer to deny the foxes an equaliser.

In the 81st minute, Norwegian international Bizet made her debut for Tottenham coming on for Summanan after a clash of heads. Leicester began to grow in the last five minutes pushing forward looking for their Second of the match. The fourth official indicated a minimum of five minutes of injury time. Tottenham looked the most in control in the final minutes of the game, passing the ball around and keeping control of possession as they looked to let the clock run down. Tottenham almost found a third in the 92nd minute when Simon broke on the counter but had no support up with her before Leicester recovered the ball from the Australian before the referee brought the game to an end as Tottenham took their first 3 points of the new campaign.

Player of the match.

Our player of the match was a tough decision as two players stood out for us, Summanen looked fantastic in midfield as always and was involved in creating chances and involved in one of the goals. The other player that stood out for us was Drew Spence who was full of energy, bursting forward, making challenges and scored a screamer for Tottenham. After careful consideration, we have decided to give our player or the match to Spence.

Post-match analysis.

Tottenham was the favourite to win this game comfortably but Leicester certainly made things challenging for our Lilywhites in the first 30 minutes as they looked the most likely to score. It took something special to finally break a stubborn Leicester defence and it was Neville who scored Tottenham’s final goal of the 2021-22 campaign against Leicester who got Tottenham’s first goal of the 2022-23 season with a rocket from distance.

Tottenham looked shakey at times but given that it’s the first game of the season it’s normal. Tottenham played well in patches but when they dominated possession they looked very dangerous going forward. Losing Clemaron will take some getting used to as now there is no enforcer in the middle of the park alongside Summanen so Percival will need to fill that position.

So what about the new signings, Amy Turner looked comfortable alongside Bartrip and Zadorksy and didn’t seem troubled at any point of the game. Angharad James had a bit of a quiet game but covered a lot of ground and was involved in the attacks as well as helping out with defensive duties. Drew Spence looked very impressive for Tottenham making forward runs and wasn’t afraid to make challenges and will be key for our Lilywhites this season. Ellie Brazil wanted to get stuck in and fought for every ball but will need some time to adapt to the Tottenham way but looked good after coming in for Ayane. Celin Bizet didn’t really get much time but looked to link up well with Simon causing Leicester problems down the left but will need time to settle in.

We would have loved to see Karczewska start upfront rather than a false number 9 but I guess it will take time to adapt many of the new players. With Arsenal less than a week away this would have been a good game to introduce her because against Arsenal we will need a natural forward and can not miss any opportunities the Gunners will give us. Overall Tottenham looked impressive, the most dangerous we have seen a Tottenham in going forward and it seems the missing pieces to make this team a Champions League challenger are finally in place. We believe this Tottenham side will be capable of pushing Arsenal and give them a tough match next Saturday COME ON YOU SPURS!!!

Next match.

Tottenham’s next match is away to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium before the international break. Tottenham’s next home match is against Liverpool on October 16th at Brisbane Road. Tickets for the match can be purchased at https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/tickets/buy-tickets/womens-tickets/ and are priced at £3.50 for Juniors and seniors, £4.50 for young adults and £7.00 for adults.

The rise of Shelina Zadorksy.

In this special we look the rise, the fall and the rebirth of Tottenham Women’s captain Shelina Zadorky who has proved no matter how many setbacks one faces in life determination will get you back to the top.

Shelina Zadorsky with the Michigan Wolverines. Photo: Michigandaily.com

It hasn’t been all plain sailing for Shelina, but she has demonstrated how determination can get you to the top matter how many setbacks one faces in life. Shelina started her soccer/football journey in 2006 where at the age of 14 Shelina represented Canada at youth level. Two years later at the age of 16 Shelina won Bronze with Canada’s U17 at the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship. Shelina also represented Canada at the 2008 U-17 World Cup in New Zealand and the 2010 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Guatemala. Shelina went on to win silver at the U-20 Championships in Panama (2010) and represented Canada in 2012 at the U-20 World Cup in Japan.

During 2010 and 2013 Shelina attended the University of Michigan, on January 2013 at the age of 20 Shelina’s dream became a reality when she made her debut with the senior team against South Korea. Two years later Shelina finished top goal scorer for Canada with 2 goals in the Pan American Games in Toronto, unfortunately for Zadorsky she did not make the roster for the 2015 World Cup which was held in Canada.
Unfortunately Canada were unable to lift the trophy on home soil as they fell 2-1 to England at the Quarter Finals stage.

Shelina Reborn.

Missing out on a place on the World Cup roster on home soil must be enough to knock anyone’s confidence, Sheina has always been a perfectionist on the field and this set back as well as putting so much pressure on herself lead to anxiety off the field. One can imagine the heartache of not being able to represent one’s country on the biggest stage/tournament in a soccer/footballer’s career can make or break a player. Many never recover and others become stronger and more motivated and for Shelina the latter is most definitely more fitting. After having spent time at Ottawa Fury (2013-14), Perth Glory (2014-15) and Vittsjö GIK (2015-16), Shelina moved to the NWSL signing for the Washington Spirit for the 2016-17 season. Motivated by missing out on the Canada roster a year earlier Zadorsky was motivated to prove her worth and make the Canada roster for the 2016 Olympics. Zadorsky settled in in no time and became a reliable rock at the defence of the Washington Spirit. Zadorsky managed 32 starts and guided the Spirit to 2nd place in the regular season 2 points behind Portland Thorns, all this in her debut season in the NWSL and for the Spirit whereas the season before Washington finished 4th. Zadorsky was also part of the same team that reached the 2016 NWSL Playoff final where it finished 2-2 after extra time and were only defeated 3-1 in the cruelest manner, a penalty shootout.

Shelina proved that there is always room for improvement and rejection today does not mean it can not be turned into success tomorrow because her reward for all her hard work in her superb debut 2016 season was that Shelina was called up to represent Canada at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Shelina Zadorsky at the Rio 2016 Olympic Semi Finals. Photo: @shelina4 Twitter.

Being called up to one of the biggest competitions to represent ones country is an achievement in itself but to win a medal is beyond any players dream. That is exactly what Zadorsky and her team mates achieved on August 19th when this inspirational group of women defeated home nation Brazil 2-1 in Sãn Paulo in the 3rd place match with goals from Christine Sinclair and Deanne Rose.

Shelina Zadorsky with her bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Photo @Shelina4 Twitter.

After a superb debut season in the NWSL and winning a bronze medal with Canada in Rio, Shelina started to catch the attention of many unfortunately the 2017 campaign did not go to plan for the Spirit who finished 10th With Zadorsky being named club captain and making the 4th most appearances for the club. The Spirits downward spiral in 2017 can only be put down to the departure of many key players such as Ali Krieger, Christine Naire, Diana Matheson and Crystal Dunn with USWNT rising star Mallory Pugh joining the Spirit too late into the season.

Move to the sunshine state.

In 2018 the Orlando Pride who finished 3rd for the first time in their history in 2017 but unfortunately were hammered in the Semi Finals of the NWSL playoff identified their defence as an area that needed strengthening. Orlando were willing to give up one of the best goalkeepers in the NWSL Aubrey Bledsoe and their number one draft pick for 2019 in exchange for former Washington Spirit player of the year Shelina Zadorsky.

Aubrey Bledsoe (left), Shelina Zadorsky (right). Photo: courtesy of coeursdefoot.fr.

There was a lot of expectation for the 2018 season after the Pride acquired Poliana, Sydney Leroux, Emily Van Egmond, Christine Nairn and Shelina Zadorsk, unfortunately after a final 4 game losing streak the Pride were only able to finish in 7th place, 7 points off a playoff spot resulting in Pride boss Tom Sermanni leaving the club by mutual agreement. Orlando had one of the best rosters in the NWSL but he just could not get the best out of these players. Sometimes a team needs new blood and with players in our squad like Camila, Alanna Kennedy, Zadorsky, Monica, Tottenham new signing Chi Ubogagu, Marta not to mention World Cup winners Ashlyn Harris, Ali Krieger, Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux the Pride should be challenging year after year for the championship and it became clear that Tom could not take the Pride any further.

Orlando Pride 2018 squad. Photo: themanelane.com.

The 2019 season did not get any better, after the appointment of former Birmingham City boss Mark Skinner, the Orlando Pride finished bottom of the table winning just 4 games out of 24 with 4 draws and 16 defeats. I do not blame the players as the Pride have a fantastic group of players and one can see their desire, heart and passion to win, they just need the right guidance and I don’t believe Mark Skinner is that Person. 2020 was the year that everyone said Mark Skinner and the Pride would prove themselves but due to the current situation the Pride were unable to participate in the Challenge Cup and with the Olympics next year many players have opted to go abroad which has worked out fantastic for Tottenham with the loan signings of Alanna Kennedy, Shelina Zadorsky and Alex Morgan.

North London Bound.

In August 2020 our Lilywhites announced the loan signing of Shelina Zadorsky of Canada and the Orlando Pride. Zadorsky has made 66 appearances for Canada and has won bronze at the 2016 Olympics. At just 27 years of age Zadorsky has already achieved more than many do in their entire career and she clearly has no intention of slowing down. Zadorsky is a winner and plays with a lot of heart, yes it’s a new league, a new culture and the fact that games are currently being played with no fans is strange for any player but Shelina is a player that has proved in the past that she can adapt to any situation and seeing her performances for Canada, Washington and Orlando she is here to achieve something not just to make up the numbers. I have no doubt that Shelina will be a fan favorite in no time and will bring some calm and confidence to the defence just as Emma Mitchell did last season.

A Champion was born.

Fast forward to the summer of 2021, after what was a very difficult season for Shelina at Tottenham, Zadorksy was called up to the Canada squad for the Tokyo 2020 (2021) Olympics. Canada was drawn in Group E alongside host Japan, Chile and Great Britain. Canada started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Japan with Christine Sinclair scoring for Canada on 6 minutes only to concede an equaliser 6 minutes from time with Mana Iwabuchi getting the goal for the hosts. Shelina started the game for Canada in the centre of defence alongside Kadeisha Buchanan playing the full 90 minutes for Canada.

In-game 2 Canada took on Chile where Canada ran out 2-1 winners with Janine Beckie getting both goals for Canada. Zadorksy again started the match in the centre of defence alongside Kadeisha Buchanan but unfortunately gave away the penalty for Chile’s goal after a review from VAR. Zadorksy again played all 90 minutes for Canada but despite giving away the penalty had a solid performance for the Canadians.

Canada took on GB in the final group game which saw Tottenham Captain benched in place of Jayne Riviere. Canada managed to get a draw with Adriana Leon getting the goal for Canada before Nichelle Prince scored an own goal 5 minutes from time to earn Team GB a draw which was enough for Canada to qualify second in Group E with 5 points, 2 behind GB on 7.

Canada took on one of the favourites Brazil in the Quarterfinals where despite a very entertaining match with Canada having 12 shots to Brazil’s 10 neither were able to score in 120 minutes. Shelina Zadorsky was again left on the bench for the match bringing up concerns over her fitness but despite the Tottenham skipper being left out Canada held out the Brazil front line and went on to win the match 4-3 on penalties setting up a semifinal matchup against rivals U.S.A.

CONCACAF Finalists meet again.

On August 2nd, Canada took on the most successful nation in women’s Olympic history, the United States of America. Canada has won Bronze at the last two Olympics and was looking to finally advance to an Olympic final. Despite the U.S’s average performances in the tournament, they were still favourites to beat the Canadians. Canada’s first shot on goal came in the 75th minute through a Jessie Fleming penalty after VAR awarded Canada a penalty after a Tierna Davidson challenge on Deanne Rose. Despite having possession the United States didn’t trouble the Canada defence until Carli Lloyd hit the bar for the U.S in the 86th minute with the U.S.A’s first clear chance of the game. Canada soaked up U.S pressure in the late stages of the match to advance to their first-ever Olympic final.

Canada’s first Olympic Final.

On August 6th Canada took on 2016 silver medalists Sweden in Yokohama which saw Tottenham Captain Shelina Zadorsky bench for a 3rd game in a row by Canada coach Bev Priestman. Canada played out a tough 1-1 draw against Sweden, which saw the Swedes have 24 shots to Canada’s 14 with both teams only managing 3 shots on goal each. Sweden dominated the first half and got their reward on 34 minutes through Stina Blackstenius. Canada came out in the second half like a new team and we saw the spirit that got them through against the U.S. in the semi-finals. After applying pressure and coming out like a new team Canada were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute after VAR looked at a challenge from Amanda Llestead on Sinclair which Jessie Fleming converted to put Canada Level. After a huge battle between both midfields, neither team was able to get a winner within 90 minutes.

Sweden dominated the first half of extra-time as Canada looked tired and rode their luck at times but the Canadian defence held strong and kept out Sweden. In the second period of extra time, Canada came out like a new team and regained control and put the Swedes under pressure who then rode their own luck but Canada was unable to get a winner. Shelina Zadorsky was introduced in the second period of extra time before the referee called an end to the game after 120 minutes. Sweden took the first penalty which Asllani missed by hitting the post, up stepped Fleming for Canada who converted her second of the match to give Canada the lead on penalties. Sweden then scored their next two penalties while Canada missed 3 in a row meaning Sweden just needed to score one to win the match and better their 2nd place finish in 2016. Sweden then missed three in a row with Stephanie Labbe saving from Joanna Anderson in sudden death before Julia Grosso’s penalty slipped under Hedvig Lindahl to give Canada a 3-2 win on penalties and their first Olympic final victory and our captain her first Gold medal.

Welcome back captain.

Tottenham took on Arsenal in the Mind Series at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 48 hours after Shelina and Canada won Gold in Tokyo. Unfortunately, Shelina was unable to play in the 0-4 defeat but she did make a brief appearance and sent a message to all the fans via a Twitter video.

Video: @spurswomen Twitter.

Zadorsky made her first appearance for Tottenham in a pre-season match against Celtic at ST Georges Park on August 25th. Coming on in the 75th minute, Zadorsky had an immediate impact linking well with new signing Kyah Simon who set up Tang Jiali where our Lilywhites ran out 6-1 winners. Goals from Tottenham’s 6-1 win came from Graham x2, Naz and new signings Ale, Clemaron, and Tang. A Hero’s welome.

As a fan of both the men’s and women’s game, it has been wonderful to see the support that Zadorsky has received from both sets of fan’s. Even the club has acknowledged Zadorsky’s achievements and received a champions reception on her return to training.

Tottenham vs Birmingham.

Tottenham takes on Birmingham this weekend in the opening match of the WSL at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which has been moved from the Hive. Hopefully, we will get to see our Gold medalist start alongside new signing Molly Bartrip in the centre of defence who impressed against Arsenal in the Mind Series along with Angela Addison and Maeva Clemaron. Tottenham vs Birmingham will kick off at 3 pm on Saturday, September 4th and will be shown live on the FA Player.

Brighton vs Tottenham. Matchday 5.

Tottenham travelled to the Broadfield Stadium to take on 10th-placed Brighton and Hove. Tottenham welcomed Kerys Harrop back into the squad after an injury had kept out the veteran. Both teams were looking to bounce back after defeats last weekend. Highlights of Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester City can be viewed below.

Video: Sky Sports Youtube.

Lineups.

Brighton 4-4-1-1: Walsh in goal, Green in a right-back with Williams and Kulberg in the centre of defence with Pattinson in at left-back. The Brighton Midfield was made of Robinson down the right, Bance and Olme in the centre of midfield with Sarri down the left. Min and Terland were up front for the seagulls.

Tottenham 3-4-3: Korpela in goal, Turner, Batrip and Zadorsky made up the back three for Tottenham. Ale and Neville were wing-backs while James and Summanen were in the centre of midfield. The Tottenham front three was made of Bizet down the right, Spence down the left and Karczewska in the number 9 position.

First half.

Tottenham started brightly winning a corner in the first 30 seconds, Tottenham then won a second corner which James took short finding Bartrip who unleashed a rocket from distance looping the ball over Walsh to give Tottenham the lead within the first minute. Brighton came back straight at Tottenham looking for an equaliser as Terland and Sarri came close with half chances. Play stopped in the 9th minute when Batrtip and Green clashed and needed medical attention. Brighton continued to come at Tottenham and came close in the 13th minute when Olme won a ball in midfield before unleashing a shot from distance but Korpela got down well to make the save. Two minutes later the hosts came close again this time Terland shooting from distance but Korpela made a good save to keep it 1-0 for Tottenham.

Tottenham doubled their lead in the 18th minute against the run of play when Walsh mis-controlled a back pass and Karczewska pounced stealing the ball and slotted into an empty net. Tottenham came close to getting a third in the 25th minute when Spence stole a ball in midfield before shooting from distance but couldn’t curl her shot enough as the ball sailed just wide of Walsh’s left-hand post. Tottenham got their third in the 28th minute when a Tottenham corner was touched by Summanen whose header found Neville who volleyed into Walsh’s left-hand corner to make it three for Spurs.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Tottenham continued to dominate possession as Brighton Struggled to cause Tottenham any problems. Brighton did come close in the 37th minute when a Terland strike was well saved by Korpela as the hosts searched for a way back into the game. Tottenham almost got a fourth goal in the 44th minute when a Turner cross was left by Spence and hit by Neville but Walsh made a good save to deny Tottenham. The fourth official indicated a minimum of 5 minutes added time and Tottenham got a fourth in the 46th minute. A Summanen’s ball was backheeled by Neville into the path of Spence who twisted her way into the Brighton box before firing past Walsh. Tottenham could have had a fifth two minutes later when Neville latched onto a loose ball and shot from distance but Walsh made a fine save to deny Neville before the referee brought the half to an end.

Second half.

Tottenham started the second half making two changes with Naz and Cho coming on for Summanen and Karczewska, Brighton also made a change with Carter coming on for Bance. Tottenham started the second half as they finished the first. James came close with a half volley but her effort was central and saved well by Walsh. Brighton came close in the 52nd minute when an Olme shot was blocked and deflected out by Cho for a Brighton corner. Tottenham got their fifth of the game in the 55th minute when Bizet ran the right wing and centred into the Brighton box, Walsh failed to collect the ball as Neville headed in the cross. Tottenham got themselves a 6th in the 59th minute when Naz found Neville with a pass who burst into the Brighton box before pulling back to Spence who slotted past Walsh for her second of the game.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Tottenham found themselves seven up right from the restart when Naz intercepted a poor pass and shot from distance, looping her effort over Walsh for Tottenham’s seventh. Williams won Brighton a free-kick on the edge of the Tottenham box in the 75th minute when she was brought down by Naz. The Brighton free-kick was straight at Korpela as Brighton began to look more lively. Brighton had a half chance in the 77th minute when Carter’s shot was blocked but fell to Terland who shot from inside the Tottenham box but her effort was blocked well for a corner. Williams found herself in the Tottenham box in the 77th minute as the ball bounced around the Tottenham box before Williams scooped her shot but Korpela saved easily.

Tottenham found themselves eight up in the 82nd minute when Ale’s throw-in found Naz, Cho stole the ball from Williams before playing the ball back to Naz who put the ball past Walsh. Brighton kept pushing forward looking for a goal and came close in the 89th minute when Terland countered for Brighton before playing through Carter who shot inside the Tottenham box, but her effort was blocked by Zadorsky for a corner. The fourth official indicated a minimum of three minutes of added time. Tottenham came close to a ninth in the 92nd minute when Ayane had a shot cleared off the line before the referee brought the game to an end.

Player of the match.

Every player deserved this as they all played out of their skin, but after careful consideration, our Tottenham player of the match goes to Ash Neville. Neville set up two goals and scored two and could have easily had more.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Post match analysis.

What a performance from our Lilywhites, one has to feel for Brighton as they played well in the opening 20 minutes and had their chances but errors cost Brighton dearly. Tottenham was lucky with a few goals as a usually solid Brighton fell apart. We have seen Tottenham in that situation many times but it was good to see Tottenham had some good fortune for once. Every Tottenham player played out of their skin and it was great to see Gracie Pearse get just over 20 minutes of playing time. There is something very special about this player and we really enjoyed finally seeing her get some playing time and can not wait to see her play more for Tottenham.

Tottenham gave a heck of a performance against a solid team but despite some good fortune, showed what they are capable of and if they play that way weekly, will be able to compete with the top three. Tottenham’s victory puts them up to 6th in the table with next week’s opposition (Everton) sitting in 7th place. The players and fans must enjoy this victory but we must not get carried away, Brighton is not as bad as they seemed in this match and next week’s match-up with Everton will no doubt be another physical battle for our Lilywhites.

With luck this performance has given the team some much-needed confidence ahead of next week’s match, the season is long and slowly players are returning from injury but after today’s performance, many teams will no doubt fear our Lilywhites. Coach Skinner was spot on with her team selection today and the return of Harrop will make Tottenham more solid at back as Ale seems vulnerable at times especially as we have seen against the heavyweights. We would have liked to see Karczewska, Neville and Summanen remain in the game, but with such a huge goal advantage we understand that these players must be protected. Tottenham returns to Brisbane Road in 6 days’ time where they will battle it out for another three points, COME ON YOU SPURS!!

Tottenham vs Manchester City. Matchday 5.

Tottenham welcomed Manchester City to Brisbane Road for matchday 4 of the WSL in the early kick-off. Manchester City sat in 8th position before kick-off after a 4-0 win over Leicester last weekend while our Lilywhites sat in 7th after their 1-0 victory over newly promoted Liverpool last weekend. Highlights of Tottenham vs Liverpool can be viewed below.

Video: Youtube.com

Lineups.

Tottenham 4-4-2: Spencer on goal, Turner in at right-back, Bartrip and Zadorsky on the centre of defence with Ale in at left-back. The Tottenham midfield was made of Bizet down the right, James and Summanen in the middle with Neville down the left. The Tottenham front two were made of Spence and Brazil.

Manchester City 4-3-3: Roebuck in goal, Casparij in at right-back, Laia and Greenwood in the centre of defence with Morgan in at left-back. The City midfield was made of Coombs, Hasegawa and Castellanos. The City front line was made of Kelly down the right, Hemp down the left with Shaw in the number 9 role.

First half.

Manchester City started the brightest of the two teams and recorded their first shot on goal in the first minute when a long Laia ball found Kelly down the right before crossing into the Tottenham box finding Hemp who attacked the ball with her head but Spencer got down to make an easy save. Tottenham came straight at City, Spencer kicking off quickly finding Spence who played a wonderful back heel to James before the Welsh international played Brazil through the middle as she took advantage of Roebuck’s miscontrol but Roebuck clashed with Brazil in the City box, the referee waved played on and Bartrip finally was able to put the ball out for Brazil to receive treatment and was substituted for Naz after a nasty knee injury. City continued to dominate the game as Tottenham struggled to cause any threat on the City goal.

City stepped up a gear in the 16th minute when Greenwood found Hemp down the left who played through Morgan before she set Shaw through but Zadorsky read the play well to get the ball to Turner before Hemp continued to pressure the Tottenham defence and won the ball back off Bizet winning a free-kick in the process. Kelly whipped in the free-kick finding Morgan’s head, but her effort was just wide of Spencer’s right-hand post. City continued to pin Tottenham back and came close again in the 24th minute when an attack started by Casparij resulted in Kelly finding Castellanos who unleashed a shot from distance but Spencer palmed away before Turner got the ball away to safety.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter

City finally got their breakthrough in the 40th minute when a Greenwood corner was met by Bunny Shaw who got away from Summanen and Neville to head the visitors ahead. City continued to pile pressure on Tottenham but Spurs came close in the 44th minute when a Turner cross found Neville unmarked but volleyed her effort over Roebuck’s bar. The fourth official indicated a minimum of 5 minutes of added time after the injury to Ellie Brazil. Tottenham finished the half strongly and had a half-chance in the 46th minute when Spence got away from two city players and played through Naz, but her cross was too long for Neville for what surely would have been the equaliser for Tottenham. City ran down the clock by passing the ball around making Tottenham chase and use energy as City held on before the game ended for the end of the half.

Second half.

The second half couldn’t have gotten off to a worst start for Tottenham after Shaw stole the ball off James, Coombs played the ball back to Shaw who shot from distance and put the ball into Spencer’s bottom right corner to give the visitors a 2-0 lead in the 46th minute. The game then went through a period of start-stop after Shaw needed medical attention after a Bartrip headed clearance hit the Jamaican in the face. The game soon found its flow again as Tottenham looked to get back into the game. City came close again to getting a third in the 60th minute when Casparij got away from Ale, and squared the ball into the box, into the path of Shaw but Bartrip was quick to react and got to the ball first putting the ball out for a corner.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Kelly came close in the 64th minute when the ball bounced around and came to Kelly who hit a ball inside the Tottenham box, but Ale managed to get a deflection on the effort to deny any threat on Spencer’s goal. City continued to pass the ball around, playing back to Roebuck to restart as they tried to draw Tottenham out but the Tottenham back-line kept in check not falling for the setup. City came close in the 68th minute when a Hemp attack found Coombs before she played off Shaw but she was unable to connect as the opportunity was wasted. Tottenham came back at City in the 69th when Spence found Neville with a long ball, Neville played through Summanan who crossed into the City box but her cross was defended well and put out for a corner. Tottenham looked brighter and looked to grow into the game as they came close in the 71st minute Neville got away from Morgan finding Spence with a pass, Spence tried to curl her effort into the top corner but her effort was just wide of Roebuck’s goal.

Castellanos came close for City in the 74th minute when she twisted and turned in the Tottenham box, before falling after a clean Bizet challenge but got back up onto the ball and got a shot away but her effort was saved comfortably by Spencer. A minute later City came back at Tottenham after Naz lost the ball with a poor pass to Spence for Tottenham, Coombs drove forward the City attack, finding Hemp on the left who twisted and turned Turner before getting her shot away from the left and slotting past Spencer for City third with help from the left-hand post. Shaw almost got her hat trick in the 79th minute when Kelly did well down the right, getting away from Ale, finding Castellanos with a pass, her long ball floated into the Tottenham box finding Shaw but she rushed her effort after getting away from Bartrip with her effort going straight at Spencer.

City continued to threaten the Tottenham goal as a minute later Hemp unleashed a shot from distance but sailed just over Spencer’s bar. Tottenham brought on Chi who made her comeback after her ban and Karczewska for Neville and Bizet in the 86th minute. Tottenham had a chance in the 89th minute when a Summanen cross was taken away from Spence as Laia only managed to get her header as far as Naz who was alone on the Edge of the City box but tried to do too much before having the ball taken off her As a result City countered with Kelly down the right as Tottenham was caught short at back but Bartrip used all her speed to catch up with Kelly putting her under pressure before Kelly’s shot sailed wide of Spencer’s right-hand post. The fourth official indicated a minimum of 5 minutes of added time. Both teams came at one another in added time as neither team accepted the result, Tottenham pushed looking for a goal as City wanted to add more and came close in the 93rd minute when Kelly got away from Ale before unleashing a shot from distance but her effort was straight at Spencer Tottenham has one final attack before the game was brought to an end but the City defence comfortably dealt with the threat.

Player of the match.

Everything just seemed to just go wrong for Tottenham in this match, no one can question the team’s heart but the player that stood out for us in this match was Molly Bartrip. The centre-back covered a lot of ground and remained solid alongside Zadorsky to prevent further City goals.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Post match analysis.

We knew that this match would be difficult but all three goals were nothing more than errors which we are sure Coach Skinner will be working on. The first goal saw Shaw get away from two Tottenham players to head past Spencer while the second goal came as a result of a rare James error, with the third also an error by Tottenham. Against a team like City, it’s understandable that Tottenham came out in a 4-4-2 to contain the City danger but Karczewska should have been the direct change for Brazil as Tottenham needed a natural number 9 in that position.

Tottenham certainly misses having an enforcer in this game and we have seen in this match and against Arsenal how important Clemaron was for Tottenham. Summanen and James are both technical players and the only player that can take on that role will be Percival when she returns for our Lilywhites. Tottenham are still building and it will take time to gel this team, the two matches against City and Arsenal have shown that Tottenham is still a way away from that level but, being a new team in the WSL Tottenham certainly surpassed expectations last season and will be looking to match or better last years 5th place finish.

It seems like Tottenham just can’t catch a break in recent seasons, last year Tottenham lost Graham early into the season, and now Brazil. Next week’s game against Brighton should see Tottenham pick up three points but will no doubt be a battle against a very physical Brighton side. If Tottenham does manage to pick up points outside of the big 3, this should help the team gel and give them confidence before taking on the big three in the return matches later in the season..

Congratulations to City, they came to Brisbane Road after once again getting off to a bad start to the season and dominated the game but we need better refereeing in the WSL, City once again was very physical, Kelly dived too much looking for free-kicks and tried to provoke players. Had that been a Tottenham player no doubt that our Lilywhites would have been called out for it due to “not being on the same level” but when bigger clubs and players use these bully tactics when things don’t go their way, it gets brushed away. Once again, congratulations to City but the FA need to do better to protect all players and clubs, not just the big three. Next week it’s Brighton away with three points up for grabs. We believe in this team and that we will come out of that battle with all three points COME ON YOU SPURS!!!

Tottenham vs Liverpool matchday 3.

The WSL is back after the international break. Tottenham’s last WSL outing saw Spurs travel to the Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal ran out 4-0 winners. This week Tottenham welcomed Championship Champions, Liverpool to Brisbane Road in what was Tottenham’s first home game of the season. The last time these two met was in last year’s Conti Cup Quarter-Finals, where a Williams goal was enough to put Tottenham through to the Semi-Finals.

Lineups.

Tottenham 3-4-3: Korpela in goal, Turner, Bartrip and Zadorsky made the back three. Neville and Ale as wings backs with James and Summanan making up the Tottenham midfield. The Tottenham front three was made of Bizet down the right, Spence down the left with karczewska in the number 9 role.

Liverpool 3-4-3: Laws in goal, Flaherty, Fahey and Matthews made up the Liverpool back line, Koivisto, Kearns, Furness and Hinds made up the Liverpool Midfield whilst the front three was made of Lawley down the right, Daniels down the left and Stengel in the number 9 role.

First half.

Photo: @spurswomen.

Tottenham started the strongest of the two teams and it took Tottenham just three minutes to have their first attempt at goal. Bizet stole the ball in midfield before shooting from distance but her effort was over Laws bar. Tottenham kept coming at Liverpool and a minute later Neville played a one-two with Spence before cutting in from the left and shooting with her right but the ball was gathered by Laws with ease. Tottenham continued to pin the visitors back and in the 11th minute, Bizet latched onto a pass from Spence before sprinting down the right centring into the Liverpool box but her cross took a defection off Fahey who put the ball into her own goal to give Tottenham the lead.

Photo: @Spurswomen Twitter.

Liverpool struggled to get out of their half as Tottenham looked for a second and should have had one in the 19th minute. Spence picked up a loose ball and unleash a rocket but her effort struck Laws right-hand post as the visitors were let off. Four minutes later Tottenham came close again when Neville latched onto a Karczewska ball but Laws spilled the ball as Neville went in for a 50/50 ball, the ball came out to Bizet who shot from distance but the Liverpool shot-stopper recovered well to deny the Norwegian. Liverpool countered Tottenham two minutes later with a rare attack, Hinds got a cross-shot away from the left but her effort flew out of bounds.

Tottenham continued to dominate possession but their biggest chance for a second goal came in the 40th minute when Neville latched onto a long Turner ball, Neville miscontrolled the ball but Karczewska recovered passing back to Neville who unleashed a shot striking the Liverpool crossbar as once again the woodwork came to Liverpool rescue. The fourth official indicated a minimum of 2 minutes of added time as Tottenham continued to push Liverpool back ending the half the strongest of the two teams.

Second half.

Tottenham started as they finished the first half and had their first chance of the second half in the 52nd minute when a Spence cross was only cleared as far as Summanen, the Finn unleashed a shot but her effort was well saved by Laws in the bottom left corner. Liverpool began to grow into the game and had their first clear chance in the 57th minute when a Liverpool cross was deflected away as far as Daniels, but her effort was straight at Korpela.

Photo: @Spurswomen Twitter.

Liverpool came close again in the 67th minute when Holland got away from Spence before shooting with her left but her effort was just wide of Korpela’s goal as Liverpool looked livelier and searched for an equaliser. Liverpool continued to dominate the second half but only managed a handful of half chances. It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes that Liverpool really tested Tottenham and their defence. Holland met a long cross in the 84th minute, centring into the Tottenham box but the ball rolled across the face of the Tottenham goal, lucky for Tottenham no Liverpool player was available to tap the ball into the net.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Two minutes later Liverpool came close again, this time Roberts put an excellent cross into the Tottenham box but Matthews was unable to reach what surely would have been the equaliser for the visitors as Tottenham again was let off the hook. Stengel came close in the 90th minute when she found herself one-on-one but Bartrip tracked back well putting Stengel off before getting her shot away as Korpela made a match-winning save to deny Liverpool. The fourth official indicated a minimum of 5 minutes of added time. The game became scrappy as both teams became desperate with lots of heavy fouls committed which saw Summanan and Hinds pick up yellow cards before the referee brought the game to an end.

Player of the match.

Many players could have taken the player of the match but as difficult as it was we feel that Celin Bizet deserves this recognition. The young Norwegian was lively and caused the Liverpool defence many problems as well and linked up well with her new teammates.

Post match analysis.

Tottenham had the best performance I’ve seen in the first 45 minutes, they looked dangerous on the attack, Celin and Neville down the wings tore Liverpool apart and should have gone in at halftime at least 3 up. Unfortunately, the second half was a different story. Credit to Matt Beards team who had to change things up. We know how dangerous Liverpool can be when they have the ball as they demonstrated against Chelsea and maybe another day those chances could have resulted in a different ending for our Lilywhites.

The Tottenham defence held strong in keeping out the Liverpool attackers and with the introduction of Holland, she and Lawley caused Tottenham many problems but Zadorsky, Bartrip and Turner were on top of their game. We don’t know if that was down to Matt Beards tactics or an error by coach skinner but after James was Substituted, Tottenham was holding on for dear life as attacks became minimal and the host dominated the remainder of the game.

So what about the attackers? Celin Bizet had a great game and seems to have settled in nicely, the goal wasn’t the prettiest but they all count and another 3 points on the board is what matters. No doubt we will see many more goals from the number 14 and seeing what she has done for Norway no doubt soon be scoring top-class goals for Tottenham. It was good to see Karczewska up front but unfortunately, it wasn’t her best game as she was unable to turn in any of her opportunities but no doubt will build a strong relationship with Bizet, James and Graham once she returns from injury and will be knocking them in very soon. Up next is City at Brisbane Road and our Lilywhites need to be on top form if we are to get anything from that game. In this team we trust and can’t wait to see our Lilywhites bring it Sunday, COME ON YOU SPURS!!!

Matchday 2: Arsenal vs Tottenham, September 24th.

After taking all three points last week against Leicester, Tottenham travelled to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal on matchday 2 of the WSL. Highlights of last week’s victory against Leicester can be viewed on our YouTube channel below.

Video: FA Player.

The last time our Lilywhites took on Arsenal, the Gunners ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Mead and Foord, highlights of last season’s encounter can be viewed below.

Video: Arsenal Youtube.

Lineups.

Arsenal 4-3-3: Zinsberger in goal, Wienroither in at right-back, Williamson and Rafaelle in the centre of defence with Catley in at left-back. The Gunners midfield was made of Little, Walti and McCabe while the Arsenal front three was made of Foord down the right, Mead down the left and Miedema in the centre.

Tottenham 3-4-3: Spencer in goal, Turner, Bartrip and Zadorsky made up the back three. Cho and Summanen in the centre of midfield with Neville and Spence in as wing-backs. The Tottenham front three was made of Bizet down the right, Naz down the left with Simon in the centre.

First half.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Arsenal started the strongest out of the two and came close in the 2nd minute when Walti centred into the Tottenham box which was met by Mead but her effort was deflected out for a corner by Neville. Arsenal continued to pile on the pressure, Mead’s shot was blocked by Bartrip but the ball came back to the Arsenal number 9 who got a second bite at the cherry and this time put her effort past Spencer to give Arsenal the lead. Two minutes later Arsenal came close again when Foord found McCabe with a pass but she could only put her effort over Spencer’s bar.

Tottenham struggled to get into the game as Arsenal dominated possession and in the 18th minute Arsenal again countered Tottenham with McCabe who put a good ball into the Tottenham box but Summanen tracked back to get the ball out to safety. The game slowed down in the 20th minute as Arsenal passed the ball around, making Tottenham chase the ball to tire them out. Arsenal kept looking the most dangerous going forward but the Tottenham defence was alert with Turner, Bartrip and Zadorsky keeping the Arsenal front line at bay.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Arsenal came close again in the 29th minute when an attack started from the back, Walti found Catley down the left who played McCabe through playing a good ball into the Tottenham box finding Little whose shot found the side netting. Arsenal again piled pressure on Tottenham. Arsenal attacked again in the 38th minute with McCabe but Turner tracked her well to put the ball out for a corner. Arsenal came close again a minute again when the Arsenal corner was poorly cleared by Tottenham as far as McCabe who centred into the Tottenham box as Foord was able to rise above all but put her header wide of Spencer’s left-hand post. Arsenal double their lead in the 43rd minute when Summanen was robbed by Catley before Miedema slotted the ball past Spencer to double Arsenal’s lead before the break.

Second half.

The second half started with no changes, Tottenham looked to start the second half brighter than the first but had no joy down the wings as Wienroither and Catley held out the Tottenham attackers. Arsenal found their rhythm again and pinned Tottenham back before coming close in the 53rd minute when Wienroither broke for Arsenal as Tottenham lost the ball but her effort was saved by Spencer for a corner. Arsenal got a third as a result when a Mead corner was met by Rafealle after the Brazilian lost Summanen to head a bullet into Spencer’s left-hand corner.

Arsenal didn’t look like easing up on Tottenham and in the 65th minute, Arsenal broke again with Miedema finding herself in a goal-scoring opportunity but Neville and Bartrip closed down the Dutchwoman quickly to regain control of possession. Miedema finally got her reward a minute later when a McCabe corner was met by Miedema who rose unmarked and headed past Spencer for Arsenal’s 4th of the game. Arsenal kept coming at Tottenham and substitute Blackstenius came close in the 72nd minute when the Swed got away from Turner before cutting in and shooting with her right foot but put her effort wide of Spencer’s left-hand post.

A rare Tottenham attack in the 77th minute was led by Neville down the right who centred into the Arsenal box as Celin Bizet leapt for the ball but Pretzelberger got in her way as Tottenham saw an opportunity for a consolation wasted. Arsenal played the ball around in the final 5 minutes but didn’t look like taking their foot off the pedal. Tottenham came close in the 89th minute when Neville stole the ball in midfield finding Karczewska, but the Polish international put her effort from distance over Zinsberger’s bar. The fourth official indicated a minimum of 3 minutes of added on time and it was the Gunners who almost ended the game with another goal when Blackstenius attacked down the left and centred into the Tottenham box finding Hurtig but the ball was intercepted by Turner for an Arsenal corner before the referee brought the game to an end.

Player of the match.

Tottenham was unfortunately outclassed against our London Rivals but a player that gave their all against the Gunners was Ash Neville who push forward to try to create chances and was solid when back defending, therefore, is our Player of the match.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Post-match analysis.

Tottenham will need to wait a little longer to get their first victory against Arsenal. Our Lilywhites are improving each year and will no doubt improve with each game as the season goes on but this game showed how ahead Arsenal are. We always back the coach, but feel the players didn’t cost us the game today instead it was our coach. We believe that skinner got the team selection and tactics wrong from the start. We would have rather seen Karczewska start up front with James in for Cho and Pretzelberger in place of Naz.

You can not play with a back three against a team like Arsenal, especially when you are away from home and not on the same level as the Gunners. Today has to be a learning curve and the positive to take is that it is only the second game of the season and Tottenham no doubt learn from this defeat to make them better throughout the season. Our new players still need to adapt and believe once the team has gelled, Tottenham will be a force.

With some luck Tottenham can go into the international break with a victory. No disrespect to Reading, but Tottenham should win that game and hopefully a win in the Conti Cup will give our team confidence going into the international break before finally playing at home against Liverpool on October 16th. As hard as this defeat is for the fans, players and coaching staff, we must learn from it, put it behind us and come back stronger than ever COME ON YOU SPURS!!

Record attendance.

Saturday’s game against Arsenal saw a record attendance for a WSL game with 47,367 showing up to the Emirates breaking the 2019 record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where 38,262 showed up to see Tottenham take on Arsenal.

Conti Cup.

The schedule for the Conti Cup has been released, Tottenham will take on Reading this Sunday, October the 2nd (A), Coventry United on November 27th (H) and Southampton on December 18th (A).

Next game.

The WSL now takes a small break for international matches. Tottenham’s next WSL match will be against Liverpool at our new ground, Brisbane Road Stadium on October 16th at 14.00. Tickets for the match can be purchased at https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/tickets/buy-tickets/womens-tickets/ and range from £3.50 for Juniors/seniors to £7.00 for adults.

2021-22 season recap.

In this special, we look back at what has been a historic season for our Lilywhites. We will look back on the season, rate our players and give our player of the season. There are so many positives that can be taken from this season, despite the lows in the second half of the season, this group of players have made us proud to be Tottenham fans.

September – December.

Tottenham announced the signings of Bartrip, Ale, Korpela, Clemaron, Chi and Tang ahead of the new season, which saw Tottenham open up their campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Birmingham City. Tottenham ran out 1-0 winners in a tough fought match with the only goal coming from Kit Graham. Tottenham followed the victory by going on a 4 match winning streak, beating Manchester City at the Academy Stadium before their run ended in October against Brighton.

Tottenham bounced back with another 4 match unbeaten run. Tottenham hammered Watford 11-0 in the Conti Cup and picked up points against Manchester United and Arsenal before West Ham handed Tottenham their 2nd defeat in a match that saw Tottenham lose Kit Graham for the remainder of the season.

Tottenham bounced back in the final games of the year by coming from behind to beat Villa 2-1 at the Bescot Stadium before ending their Conti Cup group phase with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Coventry. The victory ensured Tottenham’s place in the quarter-finals for the first time in their history before beating Everton 1-0 at the final in our Lilywhites final match of 2021.

January – May.

A lot of talk ahead of the second half of the season was about whether Tottenham could maintain their form as Tottenham sat in third place with ten matches played, two points ahead of fourth placed Manchester United.

Tottenham started 2022 with a 1-1 draw against West Ham after Kate Longhurst gabbed an equaliser for the Hammers in the 92nd minute to put a dent in Tottenham’s push for a Champion’s League place. Tottenham bounced back three days later by beating Liverpool 1-0 at the Hive in the Conti Cup quarter-finals as Tottenham booked their place in the semi-finals for the first time in their history. Rachel Williams was the scorer for the Lilywhites against the Championship side.

Tottenham endured a three-game losing streak towards the end of January with a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village before being dumped out of the FA Cup in Round 4 against Leicester, which saw Tottenham concede 8 minutes from time taking the game to extra time. Leicester went on to win the game 3-1 as our Lilywhites fell at the first hurdle in the 2021-22 FA Cup. Tottenham suffered another blow four days later as Tottenham was beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the Conti Cup semi-finals with Park, Shaw and Hemp putting the Citizens through to their first final since the 2018-19 season.

Tottenham recovered from their shaky start to 2022 with a 4-0 victory against Brighton at the Hive three days later before beating Birmingham 2-0 at St. Andrew’s before the international break. March saw Tottenham once again dip in form as their Champion’s League hopes began to fade with a goal-less draw to Reading and 1-0 defeat to Manchester City. April did not get any better for Tottenham as their European footballing dream ended with defeats to Villa and back to back defeats to Chelsea, losing 3-1 at the Hive and 2-1 four days later at Kingsmeadow.

Tottenham’s rut continued in May as Tottenham conceded late against Everton to draw 2-2 at Walton Hall Park before losing to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium three days later 3-0 as the Gunners kept their hopes of securing the WSL title alive. Tottenham hosted Leicester in the final game of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Tottenham ended the season with a 1-0 victory thanks to an Ash Neville goal. Tottenham’s victory meant that the Lilywhites maintained a 100% record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and gave fans something to smile about on a hot Sunday.

End of season highlights.

The 2021-22 season has certainly been full of ups and downs, it saw our Lilywhites create many memorable history-making moments. Below can be seen some of Tottenham’s 2021-22 best moments and we hope to see this team create many more memories in 2022-23.

News.

Since the season ended, Tottenham announced that Kerys Harrop signed a contract extension with Tottenham which will see here remain at the club until 2023.

Players ratings/keep or sell.

We never like to be critical of any players that put on a Tottenham Jersey but in this review, we will look at our squad and their contribution to the team in the 2021-22 season.

Becky Spencer: 7/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Skinner has alternated keepers this season depending on the opposition. While Spencer has been Tottenham’s number 1 for some time, the addition of Korpela has shown that while Spencer has been a good keeper for Tottenham in the first few seasons, now if Tottenham wants to compete with the top 3 and challenge for a Champions League place the player quality needs to improve. We feel that Spencer is a good backup keeper to play against smaller clubs in the Conti Cup but as Tottenham look to challenge Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City the level of players needs to match those of the big three. Spencer has different strengths from Korpela, whilst playing from the back seems to be one of her weaknesses, Spencer has had a back/hip problem for a few seasons which kept her out for a chuck of the 2020-21 season and would be better suited as a backup to Korpela.

Tinja Korpela: 8/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Korpela has been a great addition to the Tottenham team, an international with years of experience not only at club level but at international level too. Korpela has brought some much-needed confidence to the defence as the team now tries to play out from the back similar to the style used by FC Barcelona Femeni. Korpela conceded 13 goals in the WSL to Spencer’s 7 but the level of opposition that Korpela faced was much higher than Spencer. Skinner and our fans know that Tottenham makes too many errors at the back and a few reinforcements are needed to protect whoever Skinner decides to play between the sticks while the defence and midfielders need to work on perfecting their passing game from the back.

Ash Neville: 7/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Neville has been at Tottenham for five seasons and has been a fan favourite for many years. Neville is a versatile player that can play at right-back, left-back and down the wings. Neville took a dip in form towards the end of last season and at the start of the 2021-22 season but really turned things around in the second half of the season not only defensively but also by grabbing a few important goals for our Lilywhites including the win on the final day of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Leicester. At the age of 29, Neville still has a few years left in her but Tottenham needs to think about the future and build a young team that will compete for years to come. Ale came to Tottenham with a big reputation but has failed to give Neville any real competition in defence.

Asmita Ale: 6/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Ale came to Tottenham with a big reputation and was rated as one of the brightest young talents. Ale took some time to settle in and her inexperience could be seen at the start of the season but soon found her feet and like Neville is a versatile player that can play down the left, right and down the wing. We look forward to seeing Ale next season as she continues to grow and develop as a player but like Morgan may be best to go on loan to gain that experience before returning to Tottenham.

Esther Morgan: 4/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

We have always liked Morgan but unfortunately, she is not getting much playing time under Skinner. Morgan was loaned out to Leicester City in January which we feel was a good move by the club as the 19-year-old continues her development to becoming a better player. With the recruitment of Ale, Morgan has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham and the club needs to decide whether Ale or Morgan will leave the club on loan next season. Due to Morgan’s lack of playing time, it’s difficult to judge her season with Tottenham as her only appearances came for Tottenham in the Conti Cup. Morgan has players around her to help her develop such as Neville, Batrip, Zadorsky and Harrop but her biggest problem is that she does not seem to fit in Skinner’s plans. We hope to see Morgan at Tottenham next season but she may benefit by leaving the club on loan to further her development.

Molly Bartrip: 9:10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur:

Bartrip has been a fantastic addition to the Tottenham team, Zadorsky looked more comfortable and confident alongside her in defence. Bartrip settled in from day one, never looking out of place in defence, even covering for Clemaron in midfield when Schniderbeck joined in January. Batrip started her footballing journey at Tottenham’s youth team before kick-starting her professional career at Reading where she spent 7 seasons before returning home. Bartrip clocked up the most blocks in the 2021-22 season, played every single WSL match and brought some much-needed confidence and experience to the defence.

Shelina Zadorksy: 7/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Zadorsky has ended her second season at Tottenham, our captain has gone from strength to strength but looked a little tired at certain moments of the season but our captain has hardly rested after competing in the Tokyo Olympics where she picked up Gold with Canada. Overall Zadorsky has put in another solid season and looks more confident with Bartrip by her side in the centre of defence. The 2021-22 season also saw our captain finally grab a goal in Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Brighton at the Hive and could have had a couple more had luck been on her side.

Viktoria Schnaderbeck: 5/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Schnaderbeck joined Tottenham on loan from Arsenal in January, the experienced Austrian made just 4 appearances for Tottenham but fitted in quickly and looked solid in defence the times that she was called upon by coach Skinner. Because Viktoria made just 4 appearances it felt unfair to give her a rating but she faired well and did not look out of place. Schniderbeck would be a good permanent signing for Tottenham should she leave Arsenal as Tottenham look to build a strong bench but we assume since Schniderbeck left Arsenal on loan in search of playing time, we can’t see her sitting on the Tottenham bench playing back-up to Bartrip and Zadorsky.

Kerys Harrop: 8/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Harrop has turned out to be a great addition after a shaky start since joining in 2020, the veteran has certainly found her feet since her arrival and has cemented her place into the starting 11. Harrop has been solid in defence for Tottenham and like Neville loves to go forward and is not afraid to shoot from distance. The number 3 position is probably Tottenham’s biggest weakness aside from the number 9 role. Tottenham does not have any other natural left-back. Neville and Ale have covered in matches but if Skinner wanted to rotate the team or Harrop was to face a lengthy period of time out Tottenham would be in trouble.

Maeve Clemaron: 8/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Since the departure of Rachel Furness, Tottenham has missed something in midfield. Clemaron has been a much-needed addition to the squad and has been key for Tottenham as an enforcer, unfortunately picking up 7 yellow cards and winning back possession whilst stopping the opposition’s attacks. Clemaron is not known for her goals but she does love to get forward and is not shy of shooting from distance. Losing Graham so early in the season saw Clemaron having to adapt with different partners in midfield until the arrival of Summanan which saw the French international build a partnership alongside the Finn and Percival. We are excited to see the partnership the trio build with Kit Graham once she returns from injury.

Josie Green: 6/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Green is another player who has been with Tottenham before promotion but like others in this squad, maybe is not cut out for the WSL. We have seen a vast improvement this season and she did look more solid in midfield. It seems that Percival and Clemaron have helped Green develop as a player but Green is a player we believe should be let go. Tottenham has spent the first three seasons growing and now it’s time to build a squad of top players. Green is not a playmaker to drive Tottenham forward and spends most of the game on the ground. There is no denying that she has a lot of heart but this can only get you so far and for Tottenham to continue growing they must part way with Green.

Evaliina Summanen: 8/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Summanen only joined Tottenham in January but looked a brilliant signing from her first outing. Summanen has formed a brilliant partnership in midfield alongside Percival and Clemaron and creates many chances for the forwards. We are looking forward to Sammanen and Graham linking up next season and hope the return of our number 16 can help the team from missing so many chances in front of the goal. Like Clemaron and Percival, the Finn likes to get stuck in and enjoys getting forward. Summanan is still awaiting her first Tottenham goal but with what we have seen so far, it won’t be long until she gets on the scoresheet.

Cho So-Hyun: 6/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Cho has not had much playing time at Tottenham since the arrival of Summanen. Cho has not lived up to the hype we saw at West Ham and with Clemaron and Summanen’s arrival, Cho fell down the pecking order. Cho’s style might be best suited to another club and therefore we believe should be let go during the summer. Cho has gone missing in many games and there have been times that we have forgotten she was on the pitch. Cho is a player that seems to hold up play too much denying Tottenham of attacking opportunities.

Jessica Naz: 6/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Naz is a player that we just do not feel is made for the WSL, ever since her long injury, she gets scared and pulls out of challenges too regularly. Naz is a quick player but most of the time does not know what to do with the ball, she loses possession too quickly or lets the ball run out of play. We don’t believe that Naz is WSL quality and would suit a Championship side where the expectation is less than at Tottenham. Naz scored a wonderful goal against Everton but the negatives outweigh the positives and playing with Naz is like playing with a headless chicken and feels like the team is playing with 10 and is in Tottenham’s best interest to let her go.

Rosella Ayane: 4/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Ayane is a player that came to Tottenham with a lot of hype after her time in Cyprus where she bagged 14 goals in 15 appearances for Apollon Limassol. On her return to England, Ayane joined Bristol City where she scored 1 goal in 15 appearances before moving to Tottenham where she has scored 2 league goals in 43 appearances for our Lilywhites. At the age of 26, we feel that Ayane has not been able to up her game in the WSL and would be better suited for the Championship or a minnow league. Like Naz Ayane is a player that runs the ball out of play too often, does not know what to do when in possession of the ball and spends most of her time arguing with the referees. Ayane is a player that must be let go by Tottenham if this team is to develop and build a competitive bench.

Angela Addison: 6/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Addison is a player that we have always liked and feel should get more playing time but feel it would be good for Addison to go out on loan for the 2022-23 season. At the age of 23, a player with her talent should not be sitting on the bench, for her growth as a player Addison needs to develop at another club if she does not fit in Skinner’s plans. Addison could easily give City’s Hemp a run for her money in the England squad but needs regular minutes to break into the squad. We hope that Addison will be given the opportunity to show her capability but for now, her best bet would be to go on loan.

Kyah Simon: 4/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Australia has a superb squad but has underachieved at the top level but it will be just a matter of time before they finally win a World Cup or Olympic games. When Simon was signed many thought that we were getting our very own Sam Kerr but instead we got a player that has not shown any qualities that our former players did not have. In our opinion, Quinn was more effective in games than Simon has been all season. Had Quinn been given more playing time under Skinner she would have no doubt returned to the form that made her a hit with the Tottenham faithful under Karen and Juan. We have to give Simon the benefit of the doubt as she has had a few injuries this season and needs to adapt to a new league but we feel that Simon should be let go.

Chi: 2/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Chi is a player that first came to our attention in 2017 after signing with the Orlando Pride from Huston Dash. We were excited when Chi signed for Tottenham and believed with Chi down one wing and Addison on the other, Tottenham would be tearing up defences in 2021-22. Unfortunately, in the few games that Chi partook in for Tottenham, her performances were below average. After the issues that Chi has endured in her first season back in England we will have to see if there are any improvements next season but if our Lilywhites are to be a force next season Chi will have to be a bench warmer until she proves herself otherwise.

Kit Graham: 7/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Graham had an explosive start to the season but unfortunately, her season was cut short after a Kate Longsworth challenge put Graham out for the season. Tottenham has certainly missed Graham and despite her absence did extremely well to be fighting for a Champions League place until late March. Hopefully, Graham can remain injury-free next season as our Lilywhites look to write another chapter in Tottenham’s history books. We are excited to see how Graham will link up with Summanan next season and hopefully a new number 9 as no doubt Graham will be eager to get back causing defences problems and scoring goals.

Tang Jiali: 5/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

Tang arrived at Tottenham as a goal machine after she arrived from Shanghai Shengli and her performances with the Chinese national team. Tang was never given a real opportunity to show what she could do as Williams was usually favoured ahead of Tang. Despite Tang only making 9 appearances for Tottenham in the WSL and failing to score, she always gave everything on the pitch, challenging for balls and looking to pick out Naz and Williams with passes to create chances for Tottenham. We believe that Tang will return to Shanghai now that the season has ended and look for regular football elsewhere.

Rachel Williams: 7/10

Photo: Tottenham Hotspur.

William is another player that we feel needs to be let go, at the age of 34, Williams managed just 4 goals. Tottenham needs to look at recruiting a young forward that can lead the line for many years to come. If Tottenham was to keep Williams, it would have to be as a benchwarmer to come on in the final 10 minutes or against minnow clubs in the Conti Cup. Williams is a strong forward and no one can deny that she has a lot of heart but that is where the positives end. Williams is not a lethal goal scorer, misses too many opportunities, had Tottenham had someone else upfront the season could have been very different. We thank Williams for her service to Tottenham but it’s time for her to move on.

Player of the season.

So many players gave so much for the club this season and this decision was very difficult for us. We short listed our top 3 players and they came in at

3: Evaliina Summanen

2: Maeve Clemaron

1: Molly Bartrip:

We decided that our stand out player of the season has to go to our number 5, Molly Bartrip. Not only has Molly been an inspiration on the pitch, played every minute in the WSL, blocking the most shots in the league (27) and with 8 clean sheets to her name at Tottenham but also for her work off the pitch raising Mental Health Awareness. Molly has come a long way after battling off the pitch with anorexia and mental health issues to become one of the best defenders in England. Her inspirational story can be seen below on Youtube and we hope Molly continues to inspire those that are going through similar battles.

NEWS.

In other news, Tottenham announced that Chi (Chioma Ubogagu) has been suspended for nine months following an anti-doping violation. Chi will not be available for selection until she has served her ban which will run until October 2022. We know the club and players will support Chi during this difficult time and hope to see her back on the pitch finding the form that made her a favourite at the Orlando Pride. An article by Chi explaining what happened can be viewed over at https://www.theplayerstribune.com/posts/chioma-ubogagu-tottenham-hotspur-soccer

Last-minute departures.

Final thoughts.

Let’s look at the highlights of the 2021-22 season, this Tottenham side has achieved

  • The highest WSL finish by any Tottenham team ever.
  • Most WSL wins, points and goals in a season.
  • First win and a perfect record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
  • Recorded their biggest WSL Victory (4-0 vs Brighton).
  • First Conti Cup Semi-finals appearance.
  • First WSL wins against a top 4 team and registered their first points against two.

Following the departure of William, Green and Addison it seems like Tottenham is moving in the right direction to improve the squad for the 2022-23 season. Addison will be a huge loss for the club but for her growth as a player, it’s better that she finds playing time at a club that will appreciate her talent.

If Tottenham is to come out of the shadows of Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City they need to look at what Manchester United have achieved considering they both came up in the same season. Tottenham has a lot of work ahead of them this summer and what better place to look at recruitment than the Euros which begins in a little over a month. Hopefully, Tottenham can add some signings that will push us into the Top 3 and dethrone one of the big three.

Possible recruitments.

It may be too early to talk about transfers but with Lisa Evans leaving Arsenal and Caroline Weir leaving Manchester City, these are two very experienced players that can strengthen the Tottenham squad. Other players that could be on the move in search of regular playing time are Beth England, Jill Scott, Nikita Parris and Barcelona’s Leila Ouahabi while Birmingham’s relegation could mean potential moves for Louise Quinn, Veatriki Sarri and former Lilywhite Lucy Quinn. We will have to wait a little longer to see who dresses in the famous white for our Lilywhites. The WSL will be back before too soon but until then we have the delayed Euros to look forward to. We would like to wish all the teams involved the best of luck and we will be back in September.

Tottenham vs Leicester: Matchday 22.

Tottenham welcomed 11th placed Leicester City to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the final game of the season. The last time these two teams met in the WSL, Tottenham ran out 2-0 winners at the King Power Stadium with goals from William and Addison. Tottenham was looking for revenge after being defeated by Leicester 3-1 in the FA Cup AET back in January.

Leicester went into the final game of the season knowing that they were safe after Birmingham was relegated for the first time in their history on Wednesday night after a 6-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Tottenham was looking to end the season on a high after a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

Lineups.

Photo: @likywhiteladies Twitter.

Tottenham 3-4-3 Spencer in goal, Bartrip, Harrop and Zadorksy in the centre of defence with Neville in at right wing-back and Ale in at left-wing-back with Clemaron, Summanen in the middle. The Tottenham front three was made of Ayane down the right, Naz down the left and William in the centre.

Leicester 5-3-2: Lambourne in goal, De Graff in at right-back, Howard, Plumptre and Purfield in the center of defence with Goodwin at left-back. The Leicester midfield was made of O’Brien, Tierney and McManus. The Leicester front line was made of Pike and Gregory.

First half.

Photo: @lilywhiteladies Twitter.

Tottenham started in full control of the game, dominating possession as Leicester struggled to get the ball off Tottenham. A Leicester counter in the 6th minute almost led to the opener but a good block by Zadorksy from a Pike effort prevented any danger on the Tottenham goal. Tottenham came back at Leicester and should have had the opener in the 9th minute when a good ball by Neville across the face of the goal was missed by Ayane as Leicester was let off the hook.

A minute later Tottenham threatened the Leicester goal again, this time Neville found herself one-on-one with Lambourne but the Leicester keeper was quick off her line to deny Neville. Tottenham continued to pile on the pressure and Clemaron intercepted a poor Lambourne pass out and shot from distance but her effort was straight at the keeper. Leicester countered Tottenham a minute later and should have taken the lead when Gregory centred into the Tottenham box, Zadorksy only managed to get the ball as far as Goodwin who put her effort over the Tottenham bar.

Photo: @lilywhiteladies Twitter.

Tottenham came close in the 28th minute when Ayane latched onto an Ale pass, skipping past De Graff but put her effort straight into the hands of Lambourne. Tottenham had claims for a penalty turned away in the 37th minute when Ayane seemed to be pushed over by De Graff in the Leicester box. Tottenham’s best chance came in the 41st minute when some wonderful passing play led to Harrop hitting the outside of Lambourne’s left-hand post with with thunderous shot from distance.

Second half.

Tottenham started the second half just like they finished the first, by dominating possession and had claims for another penalty turned down in the 48th minute when a Clemaron strike seemed to strike Tierney’s arm but instead Tottenham was awarded a corner. Bartrip’s corner found Naz who twisted and turned Goodwin before she got her cross into the Leicester box, Neville rose above everyone to head past Lambourne to give Tottenham the lead in the 49th minute.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Tottenham continued to pin Leicester back and should have gotten a second in the 51st minute when Williams put in a wonderful ball across the face of the Leicester goal but no one attacked the ball before Leicester got the ball away. Tottenham came close again in the 54th minute when a wonderful long Bartrip ball found Ale but Lambourne was quickly off her line to make the block before Ale was able to get her shot away.

Leicester struggled to get out of their half as Tottenham searched for a second. Bartrip came close to adding a second for Tottenham when she gathered a loose ball and shot from distance but her effort was just over the Leicester bar. Tottenham was almost punished in the 70th minute when Tottenham was caught short at the back from a Leicester counter but Bartrip tracked Baker back and managed to get in a last-second block to deny Leicester. Tottenham was almost punished in the 74th minute when a Baker Ball was put in across the face of the Tottenham goal but no one was there to attack the cross.

Photo: @lilywhiteladies Twitter.

Tottenham continued to pile on the pressure in the final 10 minutes and Tottenham once again had claims for a penalty turned down in the 83rd minute when Addison ran at the Leicester defence, leaving behind the De Graff before being bundled over in the box but somehow a foul was given against Addison. Leicester should have seen themselves down to 10 in the 85th minute when Tierney lashed out at Summanen off the ball but was only given a yellow card for her offence.

Tottenham passed the ball around in the final few minutes of the game as they looked to draw Leicester out. Neville came close in the 87th minute when a good run by the full-back led to a shot on her weaker left foot but fortunately for Leicester, Neville could only direct her shot straight into Lambourne’s hands. The 4th official indicated a minimum of 4 minutes added time as Tottenham held on to possession, running the clock down before the game was brought to an end.

Player of the Match.

Our final player of the match for the season goes to Ash Neville. Neville caused the Leicester defence and keeper plenty of problems and got Tottenham’s only goal of the match.

End of season awards.

Straight after the match Tottenham held their end of season awards which saw Neville, Williams and Bartrip pick up awards.

Post match analysis.

What a way to finish up what has been a memorable, history making season for our Lilywhites. The 2021-22 season has produced Tottenham’s highest ever WSL finish (5th), first ever Conti Cup semi-final, first victory against one of the big three (1-2 vs Manchester City), first WSL points against Arsenal and Manchester United and biggest ever WSL win (4-0 vs Brighton).

Tottenham finished the 2021-22 season in stylish manner, dominating Leicester from the first minute which saw our Lilywhites end the game game with 66% possession to Leicester’s 34% and 551 passes to Leicester’s 277. Tottenham aimed to finish the season in a high and should have by more than one goal but miss opportunities was our downfall. Leicester just registers 1 got on goal and even though they were safe from relegation seemed to just want to defend the whole 90 minutes.

Tottenham fans certainly were left smiling after what has been a tough couple of weeks for this Tottenham side but now they need to enjoy their break and hopefully the board will bring some re-enforcements for the new season as our Lilywhites aim to better this season. Next week we will have our end of season blog where we will look back at a memorable season and announce our player of the season COME ON YOU SPURS!!

Everton vs Tottenham: Matchday 20

Tottenham visited Walton Hall Park to take on 10th placed Everton on Matchday 21. The last time both teams met was in December when Tottenham ran out 1-0 winners with a goal from Naz. Tottenham was looking to bounce back after back to back defeats to Chelsea while Everton look to avoid relegation.

Tottenham went down to 10 player Chelsea on Sunday at the hive after many missed opportunities cost the Lilywhites a famous victory against the Champion before going down 2-1 at Kingsmeadow 4 days later after a hard-fought match. Highlights of both matches can be viewed below.

News.

Tottenham captain Shelina Zadorksy played her 50th game for Tottenham this week in Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea on Thursday night. Zadorsky has been one of Tottenham’s key players since coming to the club in 2020. Zadorsky has been such an instrumental addition that she was named club captain after taking over from Josie Green.

Lineups.

Everton 5-4-1: Brosnan in goal, Maier in at right-back, Bjorn, Finnigan and George in the center of defence while Pattinson was at left-back. The Everton midfield was made of Anvegard down the right, Bennison and Graham in the center of midfield with Magill down the left. Toni Duggan was Everton’s lone striker.

Tottenham 3-5-2: Spencer in goal, Bartrip, Zadorksy and Harrop made up the back three for Tottenham. The Tottenham midfield was made of Neville as a right wing-back, Summanen, Ayane and Clemaron in the center with Ale down the left as a wing-back. Upfront for Tottenham was Williams and Tang.

First half.

Tottenham got the game underway and dominated possession from the start. The blues had their first chance in the second minute when an Everton counter led to a Graham shot from distance but her effort was wide of Spencer’s right-hand post. Tottenham came back at Everton with Williams finding Summanen with a pass as she ran through the Everton defence before getting her shot away, Ale got the final touch to give Tottenham the lead in the 5th minute.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Tottenham continued to put pressure on Everton and should have gotten a second in the 7th minute when Neville found Ayane who found herself one-on-one with Brosnan before getting her shot away but her effort was cleared off the line by Bjorn to keep the gap at just 1 goal. Everton came close to grabbing an equaliser in the 13th minute when a Maier ball was met by Duggan, but her header was just wide of the Tottenham goal.

Everton came close in the 22nd minute when a wonderful run by Pattinson, who skipped past four challenges before her effort was deflected for a corner. Despite the game slowing down as Everton settled into the game and most of the play taking place in the middle of the park, it was still Tottenham that looked the more dangerous when going forward. Tottenham should have gotten a second in the 36th minute when a Bartrip corner was met by William who headed the ball across the box finding Tang who tried an acrobatic volley but her effort went over Brosnan’s bar.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Tottenham continued to push Everton back as Tang found Ayane with a pass in the 40th minute and centred into the box as Neville made a run in but was tracked well by Pattinson and could only put her effort wide. Tottenham should have grabbed a second in the 44th minute when Ale found Ayane with a chip finding herself one-on-one with Brosnan but shot straight at the Everton keeper. The 4th official indicated a minimum of 2 minutes added time as Tottenham continued to dominate possession and push the Toffees back but was unable to get a second before the break.

Second half.

Tottenham made two changes at halftime with Naz coming on for Tang and Cho coming on for Harrop. Everton came out more offensive in the second half as Tottenham lost some of the control that they enjoyed in the first half. Neither team was able to create any clear chances until the 60th minute when Summanen latched onto a loose ball and shot from distance but her effort went wide of Brosnan’s goal as both keepers remained untested in the second half.

Two minutes later, Tottenham came close again when Summanen intercepted an Everton pass and found Cho before the South Korean unleashed a shot from distance but it sailed just by wide of Brosnan’s left post. Everton could have grabbed an equaliser in the 64th minute when Dali found Duggan with a pass whose shot went across the face of the Tottenham goal but Magill who was making a run to the far post was unable to reach the ball as Tottenham was let off.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Tottenham came close again to finding a second in the 67th minute, when a quick Tottenham counter saw Williams find Ayane with a pass who shot from a tight angle, Brosnan somehow got a glove to the ball and it bounced off the bar as far as Williams who passed to Naz but put her effort wide of the Everton goal. Everton came close in the 78th minute when a Bennison free-kick was met in the air by George but her header was a comfortable save for Spencer.

Tottenham came straight back at Everton when Clemaron stole the ball in midfield before finding cho with a pass down the right who tried to pick out Williams in the Everton box but good defending by Bjorn put the ball out for a throw. Everton managed to draw Everton level in the 85th minute when Dali got a cross into the Tottenham box and Turner rose unmarked to put the ball past Spencer to draw the host level. Tottenham came straight back at Everton Naz used her speed to leave Pattinson behind and got the ball into the Everton box as substitute Josie Green slid in behind Graham to turn the cross in and give Tottenham the lead with 5 minutes left to play.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Everton came straight back at Tottenham from the restart as Dali started the attack for Everton before finding Pattinson who unleashed a shot but her effort was well blocked by Bartrip. The 4th official indicated a minimum of 5 minutes added time and in the 91st minute a long Benninson cross found Finnigan at the far post as she beat Ale to the ball to head Everton level. Both teams pushed forward in the final minutes looking to snatch something at the end but both sets of defenders did their job as the game ended with both teams sharing the points.

Player of the match.

This week’s player of the match goes to Rachel Williams. Williams was everywhere for our Lilywhites in midfield making tackles, creating chances and threatening the Everton goal.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Post-match analysis.

Tottenham will go into the North London Derby without a win in 6. Arsenal needs to win to put pressure on Chelsea as the title race looks like it will go down to the final day. A victory for Tottenham will give this team a huge boost ahead of their final game of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as our Lilywhites seek revenge against a Leicester team that ended Tottenham’s FA Cup run.

Tottenham was overall the better side against Everton and should have comfortably finished the game by half-time but missed opportunities once again cost Tottenham the 3 points. Skinner put out a strong squad as Everton struggled to keep Tottenham at bay but it just fell apart for our Lilywhites in the final 5 minutes. It was good to see Tang get a rare start but she was unable to threaten the Everton goal as much as we would have liked but this could be due to a lack of playing time during her time at Tottenham.

The last few weeks have been tough for Tottenham and the fans and despite all the positives that can be taken from the last few weeks ,the staff know that some rebuilding needs to be done ahead of the new season if Tottenham wants to challenge for Champions League football. No doubt our Lilywhites have learnt a lot from the matches against Chelsea and Everton and will go into the derby with high spirits but they have to learn to be more ruthless in front of goal. We wish our Lilywhite the best of luck for Wednesday and believe they will make it tough for Arsenal before they end the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next week, COME ON YOU SPURS!!!

Next match.

Tottenham will take on Arsenal this Wednesday at the Emirates Stadium before the 2021-22 WSL season comes to end when our Lilywhites take on Leicester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, May 8th at 12 noon. Tottenham vs Leicester

Tottenham vs Chelsea, Matchday 18.

Tottenham welcomed Chelsea to the Hive in Tottenham’s last home game at the Hive in the 2021-22 season. It has been almost a year since Tottenham last faced the WSL Champions as Chelsea continued their push for their 3rd championship in a row.

The last time both teams met Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners with a double from Sam Kerr. Tottenham is a different team this season and has shown that the Hive is a difficult place for visiting teams to come and get points but the Champions are probably Tottenham’s toughest opposition to date in the current season.

Tottenham was looking to bounce back after two defeats in a row and taking just 1 point from their last 3 matches. Highlights of Tottenham’s last match against Aston Villa can be seen below.

Tottenham came close in the 9th minute when a Bartrip corner was met by Williams but her header was just over Berger’s bar. Tottenham settled into the game quickly and gained control of possession. Tottenham had claims for a penalty rejected in the 21st minute when Charles seemed to connect with Williams in the box but no VAR in the super league cost Tottenham a chance to double their lead. Chelsea managed to get back on level terms when Ji found Reiten with a pass before leaving Neville behind and unleashing a cross/shot which looped over Korpela to draw Chelsea level.

Williams found herself in a goal-scoring opportunity after latching onto a Cho long ball before Berger rushed outside of her box and clashed with Williams and was shown a straight red card. Tottenham took advantage of Chelsea being down to 10 players by dominating possession and pinning Chelsea back. Tottenham tried to look for a way through a stubborn Chelsea defence but was unable to capitalise and get a second before the break.

The 4th official indicated a minimum of 5 minutes of added time. Tottenham continued to throw everything at Chelsea looking for a goal but it was Chelsea that came closest in the 50th minute when Sam Kerr ran down the left-wing and centred into the box finding Reiten but Bartrip was able to get a good block in to deny the hosts a second before the break.

Second half.

Chelsea made two changes at half-time with Harder and Erikson coming on for Ji and Nouwen. Chelsea started the second half the strongest of the two teams not letting Tottenham settle and control possession. Tottenham began to settle from the 55th minute regaining control of the game. Chelsea came close in the 56th minute when Kerr latched onto a long ball but fantastic defending by Schnaderbeck put pressure on Kerr as Korpela made the save to deny Chelsea a second.

Tottenham came straight at Chelsea a minute later with Summanen finding Harrop down the left before unleashing a shot cross but her effort was palmed away by Musovic only as far as Naz but put her effort over the Chelsea bar for what should have been Tottenham’s second of the game. Tottenham continued to pressure Chelsea and came close again in the 68th minute after a great interception by Summanen found Harrop with a pass before setting Naz loose who did well twisting and turning the Chelsea defence before skying her effort over Musovic’s bar.

Tottenham was punished for all their missed chances two minutes later in the 70th minute when Anderson gots a cross into the Tottenham box finding Kerr who nodded the ball past Korpela to give Chelsea the lead. Tottenham pushed everyone forward looking for an equaliser but struggled to break through a defensive Chelsea team who double-teamed Tottenham’s attackers to prevent them from creating any opportunities. Chelsea played the final 5 minutes more physicalcally which saw Carter and Bright booked for challenges which could have seen Chelsea go down to 9.

The 4th official Indicated a minimum of 5 minutes of injury time as Tottenham threw everything at Chelsea. Tottenham was punished in the 94th minute when a misplaced pass by Summanen was gathered by Fleming who shot from distance into Korpela’s top left corner to give Chelsea a third before the game was brought to an end.

Player of the match.

Tottenham gave their all against a tough opposition. Every player played with heart and soul but as hard as the decision for this week’s player of the match was we have gone with Molly Bartrip. Bartrip was solid in the Tottenham defence, she kept Kerr and England quiet and was a threat to the Chelsea goal on numerous occasions.

Post match analysis.

What could have been, Looking at the result anyone would think that the champions dominated Tottenham with a 1-3 victory but the reality was very different. It was always going to be tough against a Chelsea team that has world-class talent all over the field but our Lilywhites dominated possession and should have gotten something out of the game but this is where we saw the difference between a world-class team and our Lilywhites which are still growing in the WSL.

It’s very rare to see a team with 10 beat a team with 11 but had Tottenham had a different set of forwards, they may have been able to take advantage of Chelsea being down to 10 players. We can all be proud of the performance that the team gave but in the end what counts is the result and we saw the difference in squad strength. Despite the defeat, Tottenham can take a lot of positives out of this game going into Thursday’s match with Chelsea at Kingsmeadow.

Every player gave out their all however, we would like to see Tang start alongside Williams on Thursday as we need players that will take advantage of any opportunities that Chelsea gives our Lilywhites. Tottenham needs to be more ruthless in front of goal as we saw with Chelsea. This Tottenham team continues to Impress, learn and create history. With Neville, Graham and Skinner all renewing we know this team is going in the right direction to continue creating history and on the right path to becoming a force in the WSL.

Line ups.

Tottenham 4-3-3: Spencer in goal, Neville in at right-back, Bartrip and Zadorksy in the centre of defence with Harrop in at left-back. The Tottenham midfield was made of Percival, Clemaron and Summanen. The Tottenham front there was made of Naz down the left, Simon down the right and Williams in the centre.

Aston Villa 4-3-3: Hampton in goal, Mayling in at right-back, Corsie and Asante in the centre of defence with Pacheco in at left-back. The Villa midfield was made of Allen, Littlejohn and Blindkilde-Browne. The Villa attack was made of Lehmann down the right, Petzelberger down the left and Gielnik in the center.

First Half.

It took Tottenham just two minutes to register their first shot on target when Summanen got to a loose ball and shot from distance but Hampton made a comfortable save. Tottenham came close in the 10th minute when Neville found Williams with a pass before finding herself one on one with Hampton but hesitated the shot as Corsie managed to get back and make a last-minute challenge just before she got her shot away. Villa had calls for a penalty turned away in the 17th minute when Lehmann went for a Petzelberger cross and seemed to be pushed by Harrop but the referee waved play on.

The game began to slow down as most of the play took place in the center of midfield as both teams battled to find an opening. Despite the congestion, Tottenham was still the team that looked most likely to get themselves the opener and came close in the 37th minute when Clemaron got to a loose ball and shot from distance but her effort was just wide of Hampton’s left-hand post. Two minutes later Tottenham came close again when Tottenham broke with Simon before finding Neville with a pass, Neville got her cross into the Villa box but it was just too high for Williams who was unable to get her head to the ball.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

The 4th official indicated a minimum of 4 minutes added time and it was Tottenham who looked the most likely to score. Tottenham kept passing the ball around trying to draw out the Villa defence and it paid off in the 47th minute when Naz got a cross into the box finding Williams who got a toe to the ball but was unable to turn the ball in as another chance was wasted for Tottenham before the referee brought the half to an end.

Second Half.

Tottenham made a change at halftime with Ayane coming on for Naz. Tottenham started the second half strong again and took our Lilywhites just two minutes to create a chance. Harrop attacked the left and got her cross into Williams who fought with Corsie for the ball but is unable to get enough power behind her shot as Hampton made a comfortable save. Villa had a rare attack in the 60th minute when Arthur attacked down the right and got her cross in finding Petzelberger but Bartrip gots in a good block before the ball came back out to Littlejohn who shots from distance but her effort was deflected out for a corner.

Photo: @spurswomen Twitter.

Tottenham’s best chance of the game came in the 64th minute when Zadorsky played Harrop with a long ball before she centred into the Villa box finding Summanen who laid off Percival to get her shot away but somehow her effort was blocked on the line by Corise to deny Tottenham the opener. Tottenham made their second change shortly after with Addison coming on for Summanen as Tottenham looked to add some speed down the wings.

Both teams pushed forward in the last 10 minutes as they looked for an opener whilst Tottenham looked the most likely to get the goal. Tottenham had a claim for a penalty turned down in the 82nd minute when Addison went up for a header and seemed to be pushed from behind by Littlejohn but the referee waved play on. Villa came back at Tottenham with Arthur on the attack before getting her cross into the box but Tottenham managed to get it away only as far as Pacheco who centred back into the box as Petzelberger came in round the back looping her header over Spencer to give the Visitors the lead 3 minutes from time.

The 4th official indicated a minimum of 4 minutes added time as Tottenham threw everything at Villa looking for the equaliser but was unable to get the breakthrough as Villa held on for the win before the game was brought to an end.

Player of the match.

There were many contenders for our player of the match but we had to give it to Kerys Harrop. The veteran was all over the field and kept Lehmann quiet all game. Not only did Harrop give an outstanding performance in defence as well and instrumental in Tottenham’s attacks.

Post Match Analysis.

2022 hasn’t been the kindest to our Lilywhites as the team has only managed 8 points from a possible 21 since the new year. It wouldn’t be so bad if Tottenham had played so badly that they deserved to lose those points but the reality is that our Lilywhites have actually not been bad but instead just unlucky like in this game against Villa, sure it’s obvious that Tottenham needs a lethal finisher upfront and will need to make only a couple of additions to push for Champions League football next season.

The team started and finished the strongest of the two but it came down to Villa having the luck and making the most of their only attempt on target. We have said all season that this team misses too many opportunities and will be punished sooner or later and unfortunately, we are seeing that in the second half of the season. Summanen, Percival and Harrop had an outstanding game but the forwards just miss too many chances.

The second half substitutions were questionable, Addison should have come on for Simon, not Summanen and Ayane added nothing after her introduction at half-time. The Tottenham bench needs much reinforcement in the summer with players that can change a game, should it be needed. Defeat is always tough when you are the better team but now Tottenham have to pick themselves up before going into a doubleheader with Chelsea after the international break. We believe this team is capable of more amazing things, we are so close to achieving that and we have full confidence in Skinner and Jepson and believe they will bring in the player needed to make this team a force COME ON YOU SPURS!!!

Next match.

Tottenham’s next match will be at the Hive against Chelsea. The match will take place on Sunday 24th April at 14.30 and will be shown live on BBC One. Tickets for the match are available at https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/tickets/buy-tickets/women/match-tickets/.
